Maxillary Sinus Ventilation Indices in Cases of Aspergilloma and Maxillary Sinus Cyst in the Post-operative Period
Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Objective: the aim of our study was to compare parameters of maxillary sinus ventilation in the postoperative period when different surgical approaches for cysts and fungus ball were used and to offer a different approach to the maxil-lary sinus through inferior nasal meatus.Materials and methods of the study: the study involved 78 patients suffering from fungus ball and maxillary cyst. The patients were divided into two clinical sub-groups. Maxillary sinusotomy through the inferior nasal meatus and septoplasty was made for 38 patients. Maxillary sinusotomy through the middle nasal meatus and septoplasty was performed for the patients of the second group. Parameters of maxillary sinus ventilation were measured in the postoperative period and two months after the sur-gery. Results of anatomy and functional investigations were studied. The study included characteristics of ideal gas and calculation of Reynolds number that allowed to determine beginning of the turbulent air flow. Results: two months after the surgery parameters of maxillary sinus ventilation of the patients in the first group were better than those of the second group and were close to physiological norm. In the second group ventilation of the si-nus considerably exceeded normal parameters.
