Measurement of the bond strength of luting materials used for porcelain

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. Nowadays, dental prosthetics focuses mainly on the adhesive bond between the tooth structure and aesthetic restoration materials. A wide range of luting materials that combine good mechanical and aesthetic properties are now available. But there is a clinical dilemma regarding proper selection of material for a particular clinical case.Aim of the study. To measure the bond strength of the following cements: Variolink Veneer, Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent), KoNroot Cem, KoNroot Cem Viscous (GDF GmbH), Panavia F 2,0 (Kuraray Medical Inc.) to the surface of enamel and dentin in vitro.Material and methods. Extracted human teeth were used in the study. The roots were fixed in alloy; in one group the crowns were prepared in enamel, in the other in the area of dentin. There were also fabricated porcelain rings 4 mm and 2 mm thick in diameter, using Empress 2 material. Five different cements: dual-cured cement (Variolink II, Panavia F 2.0, KoNroot Cem), light-cured cement (Variolink Veneer) and nanocomoposite cement (KoNroot Cem Viscous) were used as a luting agent.Results. The study confirmed that bond strength to enamel is definitely greater than to dentin for all measured cements. Of the measured materials, KoNRoot Cem Viscous was the best in bonding to enamel (shear bond strength of 43.8 Mpa), whereas KoNroot Cem was the best in bonding to dentin (shear bond strength about 29.5 Mpa).Conclusions. It is difficult to choose the best cement for porcelain veneers on the basis of the performed study. Dual-cured cements have greater bond strength, however, it is not possible to achieve aesthetics as good as that obtained with use of light-cured cement.
