MEASURING CORTICAL ACTIVITY DURING AUDITORY PROCESSING WITH FUNCTIONAL NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY
Journal Title: Journal of Hearing Science - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 4
Abstract
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical, non-invasive neuroimaging technique that investigates human brain activity by calculating concentrations of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin. The aim of this publication is to review the current state of the art as to how fNIRS has been used to study auditory function. We address temporal and spatial characteristics of the hemodynamic response to auditory stimulation as well as experimental factors that affect fNIRS data such as acoustic and stimulus-driven effects. The rising importance that fNIRS is generat-ing in auditory neuroscience underlines the strong potential of the technology, and it seems likely that fNIRS will become a useful clinical tool.

A RARE CASE OF VASCULAR ANOMALY OF THE VERTEBROBASILAR SYSTEM IN A PATIENT WITH MIXED TYPE VERTIGO
Background: The aim of the study is to present a patient who suffered from severe vertigo with rare arterial vascular anomaly of the vertebrobasilar system. Conclusions: In the presented case, the basilar artery was foun...
EFFECT OF LONG-TERM EXPOSURE TO TRAFFIC NOISE ON AUDITORY TEMPORAL RESOLUTION OF TRAFFIC POLICE: A PRELIMINARY STUDY
Background: Prolonged exposure to occupational noise can lead to various audiological and non-audiological effects. The present study is a preliminary investigation of the temporal resolution ability of traffic police of...
NEW PERSPECTIVES ON OLD IDEAS IN HEARING SCIENCE: INTRALABYRINTHINE PRESSURE, TENOTOMY, AND RESONANCE
It is natural to think that hearing science progresses linearly, making new discoveries and opening up fresh vistas. But it doesn’t always hap-pen that way, and false starts are not uncommon. Here a brief survey is made...
SOME REASONS FOR THE FAILURE OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OF OTOSCLEROSIS: LESSONS FROM A CASE STUDY
Background: Surgical treatment of otosclerosis requires considerable experience of the otosurgeon, especially in advanced cases or in an ear with an unusually narrow external auditory canal, a narrow niche of the round w...
RESULTS OF COCHLEAR IMPLANTATION IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL CYTOMEGALOVIRUS INFECTION VERSUS GJB2 MUTATION
Background: Children with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection face a bigger risk of neurological deficits and developmental delays associated with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Their rehabilitation with a coc...
