Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Політологія" - Year 2018, Vol 314, Issue 302

Abstract

The article is devoted to the actual problem of the influence of mass media on the formation of public opinion, the methods of the influence, as well as the results of such influence. The article draws attention to the Internet, which occupies a leading position among means of information transmission and has firmly entered the life of each family. However, despite the fact that the Internet is gradually replacing other means of mass commu-nication – the press, television, radio, their influence on the formation of public opinion should not be underestimated. Here are the pros and cons of each of the media. Mass media as a means of forming public opinion accumulate experience and affect both consciousness and actions of people. As you know, the public is more likely to influence and inspire certain ideas and thoughts. Such influence is quite successful because Ukrainians have a habit of trusting the media, which is the main source of socially important information. The authors focus on the positive and negative influence of the media on the formation of public opinion. The positive aspect is that a person receives new information, expands his outlook, forming the legal consciousness and political culture, and is able to ob-jectively evaluate events, situations, etc. However the media increasingly direct their influence on the mental structure of a person, the task of changing the thoughts, motives and goals of people are realization. And this leads to the spread of «myths», the disorien-tation of man, increasing indifference, apathy, depression in society, public discontent. The article deals with techniques and methods of manipulating public opinion, due to which there is a restriction of the public’s ability to act not only deliberately, but also to make decisions. The attention is paid to the types of propaganda and its role in shap-ing public opinion.
