Medical students perception on assignment based learning in biochemistry

Journal Title: MedPulse -International Medical Journal - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Student learning should be assessed during the course formatively as well as summatively. For students to demonstrate the application of higher order cognitive thinking and for better reinforcement and retention, we have implemented creation of chart on topic of vitamins as part of formative assessment. Aims and Objectives: 1.To foster interest about subject 2. To pursue a focused topic in depth 3. To develop innovative thinking among undergraduates 4.To improve their performance in examinations. Method: A total of 200 1st year MBBS undergraduates of 2016- 2017 batch were given assignment for creation of vitamin chart as part of formative assessment before university examinations. Charts were evaluated based on predetermined criteria by the faculty and feedback was given. Perception regarding preparation of chart, its role in reinforcement and revision of subject were taken from the students after their university xaminations. Results and Conclusions: Majority of the students i.e 80% felt that the assignment for creation of vitamin chart is a good practice as a part of formative assessment and 72% felt that vitamin chart served as a quick reference material during examinations. Majority i.e 87.3% of students felt that it was a good learning experience which gave us an evidence that such learning assignments must be a part of the curriculum.
