Metabolic syndrome - epidemic of the 21-st century, a new definition and therapeutic goals
Journal Title: Przewodnik Lekarza - Year 2005, Vol 78, Issue 6
Abstract
Worldwide mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes are strictly connected with growing tide of obesity, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. This cluster of risk factors is known as the metabolic syndrome and comprises: central obesity, hypertension, raised triglycerides and low HDL-cholesterol, and raised fasting plasma glucose concentrations. A new practical definition for metabolic syndrome for worldwide use has been established. The first step in successful management is identifying a population that is at high risk of developing metabolic syndrome. The starting goal of metabolic syndrome treatment is therapeutic lifestyle changes. However, treatment must address the multipathological process of metabolic syndrome, with each component identified and aggressively treated.
