Abstract
The article rests on the assumption that metaphor, as a fundamental principle of human thought, is not restricted to language alone but structures concepts across a range of semiotic modes. The phenomenon of multimodality suggests the relevance of studying metaphors in relation to interaction between visuals and written language or gestures and spoken language. Multimodal metaphors are defined as metaphors whose target and source domains are each represented exclusively or predominantly in different modes. The distinguished modes are as follows: written language, spoken language, visuals, sound, music, gesture, etc. Gesture is viewed here as one of the forms of human behaviour that can embody metaphors. Verbal utterances and accompanying gestures are produced as an integral part of cognitive activity that takes place on-line during the process of speaking. Functions of gestures are not restricted to illustrative ones. Gestures are recognized as intrinsic parts of an utterance. Thus metaphoric gesture is considered to be a multimodal conceptual metaphor objectivized by means of verbal and gesture modes. The analysis of samples of on-line metaphoric coverbal gestures reveals that active cross-domain mapping involves various forms of embodied cognition. It shows that gestures mostly represent the source domain. As target domain, expressed verbally, is an abstract one, co-verbal gestures depict the concrete grounds of an abstract concept. Furthermore, the analysis proves that metaphoric gestures can be of iconic and/or deictic nature and also can function as beats. Besides, not only iconic gestures, but also other types of gestures can be described as narrative ones since they appear with references to the story events.
