Journal Title: Записки з романо-германської філології - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue
Abstract
The article focuses on the comparative study of metaphorized space and time having the systemic organization of the lexical semantic field in English and Ukrainian folktales. The investigation reveals the peculiarities of notions ‘space’ and ‘time’ verbalized by nouns in both languages. The field’s structural parts – its nucleus, central zone and periphery – have been defined and examined by means of the comparative analysis. Common and different features are reflected. The aim of this discussion is to identify, compare and analyze the specific nature of the process of objectivisation of metaphorized time and space in English and Ukrainian folk tales, separate isomorphic characteristics and cultural differences in seeing the phenomenon under investigation by representatives of the respected cultures. In order to achieve the aim the following tasks were set: – justify identification of metaphorized type of time and space in English and Ukrainian fairy tales, – systematize and classify lexical units used to identify metaphorized type of time and space in English and Ukrainian folk tales, – construct lexico-semantical field “metaphorized space” and lexico-semantical field “metaphorized time” and identify their nuclei, centers and peripheries, – compare lexico-semantical field “metaphorized space” and lexico-semantical field “metaphorized time” based on the sample from Ukrainian and English folk tales. The scope of our investigation is a fragment of conceptual world image which reflects the view of native speakers of Ukrainian and English on metaphorized type of time and space as seen in folk tales. The study of speech representation and peculiarities of explication of basic categories of time and space was carried out on the sample of 200 English and 200 Ukrainian folk tales which reflect the view of people and of society on time and space in their dynamic and interplay related to mythological consciousness and the world view of different peoples at the archaic stage of their development, containing considerable amount of information related to the specifically evaluative understanding of the world. Time and space in folk tales are organized in a special way: they are modeled by the people, full of their view of the world, and as such are investigated not only as objective categories of being (ontological type) but also as subjective forms of human world view (metaphorized type). In folk tales space and time are actualized thanks to the immediate participation of people, being reproduced as a conglomerate of their internal and external experience.
