METHODOLOGICAL SUPPORT OF CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING AT EU SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

The paper discusses the methodological principles of content and language integrated learning (CLIL), which is cur- rently recognized as a leading and most efficient method of teaching foreign languages. The author analyses the experi- ence of teaching foreign languages using the CLIL at the European Union secondary schools and attempts to find possible ways to improve foreign language teaching performance in Ukraine. The specific feature of the method is that content and language learning is simultaneous, i.е. language is both an objective and means. A teacher working according to this method must have the command of a foreign language at В2 minimum. Especially valuable are non-philological teachers, able to teach their subject in a foreign language, which is learnt at this educational institution. In the conditions of modern social mobility the foreign language may be in fact the teacher’s native language, if he or she works either abroad or if his or her students are immigrants’ children. The main focus of the work is to for language competence of the future subject teachers in a foreign language or in their native language as a second language, as a required professional skill for a modern teacher.
