Methods and agents used by dental practitioners during endodontic treatment – survey study

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2008, Vol 61, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: A considerable advancement in endodontics has been observed recently, with a whole new range of materials and devices to facilitate root canal treatment. Aim of the study: To collect data on methods and agents used in endodontics, with special focus on standards and guidelines for root canal treatment as formulated by the European Society of Endodontology. Material and methods: Survey examination was carried out among dental practitioners who participated in the “New Horizons in Endodontics” conference held at the CEDE Exhibition in Lodz in 2007. Results: Most of the surveyed dentists declared that they prepare root canals using a traditional technique, and obturate the pulp chamber by means of the cold gutta-percha lateral condensation method. It was found that they rarely apply modern equipment such as a microscope or ultrasounds in their practice. Moreover, very few dental practitioners use rubber dam during root canal treatment. Conclusions: Dental practitioners do not routinely use new methods or agents in their practice and accordingly they are not in compliance with current guidelines concerning the quality of root canal treatment set out by the European Society of Endodontology.
