METHODS AND TEST RIG FOR THE BACK-TO-BACK TESTING OF FRICTION AND WEAR OF SPUR GEARS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 259, Issue 1

Abstract

Finding the effect of a new type of a lubricating oil (e.g. ecological one) or a new way of the tooth flank modification (e.g. by deposition of a thin, low-friction coating) on the life of gears is possible only experimentally. For that purpose, at the Tribology Department of the Institute for Sustainable Technologies in Radom (ITeE – PIB), a new test rig, denoted as T-12UF, has been developed. It is intended for the back-to-back testing of the friction and wear of spur gears. Three dangerous forms of wear can be tested: scuffing/scoring, pitting, and micro pitting. In the paper, a modified version of the T-12UF test rig is presented, namely the test rig denoted as T-12UM. For the purpose of implementation in a lab of one of the domestic technical universities, the new test rig needed to be validated using reference oils having extremely different extreme-pressure (EP) properties – oils called “Low” and “High.” Two gear scuffing test methods were used. Four reference oils (two of every “Low” and “High”) for each test method were employed. During the validation, the authors checked if it is possible to identify the appearance of scuffing/scoring by monitoring the friction torque. The obtained results of the validation are as expected, which indicates that the new test rig runs properly and the scuffing test methods are realised correctly.
