Methods of laboratory diagnostics of oral candidosis in removable denture wearers

Abstract
The aim of the paper is to present various diagnostic methods for oral candidosis on the basis of the available literature. The following diagnostic methods are discussed: classical (taking a swab from the oral mucosa, the direct formulation and breeding), quick (Dentocult CA and rapid identification with use of PCR test) and replica. The selection of these methods was aimed to describe the standard procedure in cases of suspected candidosis, as well as to present less-known tests that may be an alternative to practicing dentists.The most accessible, but also the most time-consuming method is to take a swab from the patient’s oral mucosa. The PCR test helps to identify the genetic material of 10 types of fungi. The negative result is able to exclude fungal infection during 5 h. The Dentocult CA test is a fast and simple method for detecting candidosis, however, it serves only as a reference. The replica method not only makes the qualitative and quantitative determination of Candida species possible, but it also indicates the location of the mucosal surfaces, which stick to the base of denture.Despite many modern methods for identifying candidosis of the oral cavity, taking direct swab from the oral mucosa combined with antimicogram to determine antifungal drug resistance is still the most appropriate diagnostic tool.
