MICROBIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE BIODEGRADATION

Journal Title: Natural Resources and Sustainable Development - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Many studies have been conducted to identify the organisms responsible for the breakdown of organic material that occurs in composting. In this paper microbiological characteristics of the compostable household waste samples taken from the population are presented. The experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions in 2011. Using the plate count method, the number of colony forming units (cfu) of mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria were determined. Increase in temperature during the composting process had the effect of changing the number of groups of analyzed microorganisms. The highest values of number of mesophilic bacteria were identified at 350C. At temperatures between 200C and 450C mesophilic bacteria dominate, but over 400C dominates thermophilic bacteria.
