Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis: An Overview

Abstract
Microwave heating refers the use of electromagnetic waves ranges from 0.01 m to 1 m wavelength of frequency 30 GHz to 0.3 GHz to generate heat in the material. These microwaves lie in the region of the electromagnetic spectrum between I.R. and Radio wave. Microwave assisted organic synthesis is found superior than other traditional methods for synthesis (heating process) of organic compounds by isomental, oil bath or hot plate etc. Microwaves have enough momentum to activate reaction mixture to cross energy barrier and complete the reaction. The basic mechanisms observed in microwave assisted organic synthesis are dipolar polarization (dielectric polarization) and conduction. The benefits of microwave synthesis includes speed, better yield and clear chemistry with less time which has provided the momentum for many chemists to switch from traditional heating method to microwave assisted heating. Applications of microwave assisted heating are in organic reactions; heterocyclic nucleus synthesis; microwave assisted extraction, drying, sintering, ashing etc.
