Miniscrews – temporary skeletal anchorage in clinical practice based on the literature

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

Implant as anchorage can be seated permanently or temporarily for the period of orthodontic treatment. Miniscrews are a special kind of temporary anchorage. They feature easy placement and removal, possible load promptly after seating, small dimensions, possibility of seating in different areas of the chewing apparatus, no influence on the aesthetic qualities of the face, low costs and minimal required co-operation with the patient. Aim: to systematize the knowledge on recommendations for use and ways of application of miniscrews in the orthodontic therapy.Materials and methods: the Medline database was searched with queries starting January 2000 and keywords such as: orthodontic anchorage, skeletal anchorage, mini–implant, micro–implant, miniscrew, microscrew. Description of treatment of patient or patients using miniscrews, regardless their age, existence of dental malocclusion and the type of used miniscrew, was the main criteria to determine whether to include the found results in the study. 42 articles describing 58 patients met the assumed criteria. Results: the type of used microscrews, their location and application in orthodontic treatment were presented. The most frequent placement of miniscrews was at the vestibular side of the maxilla, in the space between the second premolar and the first molar, as well as in the mandible, in the space between the first and second molar. The largest percentage of miniscrews was used for upper and lower molar intrusion, for distalisation of the anterior part of the alveolar arch in the maxilla, as well as for uprighting the mesially inclined mandibular molars. Conclusions: Miniscrews are an alternative for intraand extraoral anchorage in case of the teenagers and constitute basis for extension the recommendations for orthodontic therapy in the adults.
