MODAL PARTICLES IN UKRAINIAN: DIAGNOSTIC AND DIDACTIC CONTEXT
Journal Title: Мова - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 21
Abstract
The article investigates the criteria for identifying of modal particles in Ukrainian. The author defines the nature and the structure of modality as linguistic category. It is interpreted as a heterogeneous category which has cognitive and pragmatic characteristics and represents at various language levels, it expresses a way of mental and perceptual reflection of reality and results from the interaction of various constituents of a speech event (speaker, hearer, utterance content, objective reality). Ukrainian modal particles are regarded as a part of speech, which differs from other functional parts of speech, it adds various senses and emotive connotations to words, phrases and sentences. The main common identification criteria for modal particles are their inability to function as sentences and to change the true conditions of a sentence. The elimination of a modal particle from a sentence does not make it grammatically incorrect. The other traditional identification criteria are regarded as problematic since they apply to other classes of particles and functional parts of speech.
