Journal Title: Мова - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 23
Abstract
IIn this article we compare the composition, functions and roles of toponyms in the «History of Pugachev» and «The Captain’s Daughter». These works have the same theme, but differ in their ways of interpreting and presenting the reality. The paper establishes the qualitative and quantitative composition correlations of toponyms in the works analyzed. It proves that only real place names are used in the scientific and historical works, while in the novel real geographical names are used (selectively) alongside with fictional ones. It was revealed that the choice of toponyms in the works under analysis is determined both by the theme and the way of interpreting and presenting the reality. In the «History of Pugachev» not only the history of the Peasant War headed by Pugachev is portrayed, but also its historical background and its aftermath, while in «The Captain’s Daughter» the focus is laid on the fates of people and accordingly, there are fewer names employed, though the range of their characteristics is wider. It is shown that in fiction toponyms are combined with various definitions, they can make up text groups, thus expandings their functional and aesthetic potential. In the works considered we have spotted multifold characteristics of the described space, such as scientific-geographical, linguistic and emotional attributive features. Our material shows that the quantity and the quality of the toponyms used, as well as their functions, depend on the genre and stylistic identity of the text. It is proved that the main reason for employing toponyms in the «History of Pugachev» is providing authenticity of the historical past of Russia and showing the scale of military operations. In «The Captain’s Daughter» toponyms serve to mark and to refer to certain space segments, build up original text groups and are a plot-forming means, expressing the author’s ideological, artistic and aesthetic ideas.
