Model assessment of the muscular activity of the stomatognathic system during abduction and adduction
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
In this study the representative tests were carried out, their aim was to evaluate the muscular activity of the stomatognathic system during abduction and adduction of the mandible. To perform the study a spatial model of kinematics of the mandible was developed. The trajectories of the tops of condylar processes and the incisive teeth, recorded during the clinical research, were adopted as the criteria for conducting numerical calculations. Based on these criteria the configuration coordinates, mapping the movement of mandibular abduction and adduction, provided the ground for the subsequent calculations. Due to the approach proposed, the activation of the masticator and suprahyoid muscles is a result of the changes in the length of fibres at selected time pints. Therefore, a non-dimensional activity coefficient was introduced, and denoted as the ratio of the work of a particular muscle to the activity of all the muscles.
