The evaluation of dentists’ body posture at work in ergonomic conditions
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction. The work performed by a dentist can be classified as an occupation involving great physical and mental efforts in an unnatural body position for a prolonged period of time, resulting in motor organ trauma. Ergonomics is the major solution to these problems. It has been proven that an ergonomic body posture at work can limit the influence of harmful factors observed in the dentist’s work environment. Aim of the study. To find out answers to the following questions: 1. Do dentists tend to work with the ergonomic body posture in the ergonomic environment? 2. Does education in ergonomics influence the body posture at work among dentists? 3. Are there in the undergraduate education in ergonomics issues, which need to be strongly emphasized to help students to follow the principles of ergonomic body posture at work in their clinical work?Material and methods. Based on the analysis of the body posture at work (parameters of the work system) and the performed survey, a working posture of 235 dentists was evaluated. Results. A significant relationship was observed between the incidence of symptoms, the adapted body posture at work among dentists and the seniority, taking into account the method of ergonomic training. Conclusions. 1. The ergonomic work environment is not tantamount to ergonomic body posture adaptation by dentists during patients’ treatment. 2. Education in body posture at work has a strong impact on the adaptation of healthy work posture by dentists, however, an improvement of the methods of ergonomic training of both students and dentists is needed. 3. The proper head position seems to be the most important issue that should be stressed during ergonomic training.
