Conservative treatment of temporomandibular joints’ habitual subluxation in their functional disorders – case report

Abstract

In recent years, dentists worlwide are noticing increasing number of patients presenting symptoms of temporomandibular joint diseases. It can relate to approximately 84% of the adult population, according to different sources. The etiology of disorders is complex and multifactional. A significant and noticeable role lies within the muscle hyperfunction. One of the implications of hyperfunction of the masticatory muscles can be habitual luxation or subluxation of the madibule.This paper presents a description of procedures undertaken as a treatment of a patient with habitual dislocation of the mandible. The conservative therapy method was conduced – labile lower jaw was temporarily immobilized by splint attached to orthodontic brackets that had been fixed to the teeth. The metod described in the article gave satisfactory results of restorative treatment. During six months retrospective overview the patinet did not heave any TMJ subluxation. This method proved that non invasive and safe procedures were enough to achieve positive results of treatment and permited to avoid more radical methods, even including surgical treatment.
