Application and properties of 3D printing technology, the future of prosthodontics

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 6

Abstract

As technology improves, requirements for all dental restorations are increasing, both in terms of therapeutic and aesthetic effect, as well as the process of their production. In recent years, a number of technological solutions has been adapted for dentistry, for example popular CAD/ CAM technology. The main parts of each system are a scanner, software for designing and producing device. Evolution of production phase, which contained subtractive manufacturing, consisting in milling the material into a desired shape, is 3D printing, which stands out against any other methods of forming products in that the building material is applied and connected – a model is formed by the addition of material, curing the liquid or powder sintering. In view of dynamic progress of this technology, it seems appropriate to systemize current knowledge about application and properties of 3D printing, as a technology of prosthodontics future and attempt to define needs for further research, which may allow to use 3D printing on a large scale in dentistry. Many researchers are trying to discover the 3D printing technology, its properties and potential applications. In this paper, basing on the review of literature, the possible applications of 3D printing in dentistry, particularly in prosthodontics, assessment of the properties of specific products, the advantages, drawbacks and direction for further studies have been shown.
