Model investigations of the multi-layered, streaked groundwater reservoir MGWB No. 138 Toruń-Eberswalde (Noteć) Ice-Marginal Valley for estimating its borders, balance recharge and protection areas
Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2008, Vol 431, Issue 431
Abstract
Mathematical modelling is considered to be the basic method to define borders, balances of the groundwater circulation and borders of protected areas of major groundwater basins (MGWB) in Poland. Marginal valleys are specific because of their regional extension and drainage zones with relation to the adjacent moraine upland. The MGWB No. 138 – Toruń-Eberswalde Ice-Marginal Valley is an example of such a reservoir. It is about 140 km in length and about 2.0–10.0 km in width. The basin is extensive, elongated and connected with surrounding systems. Within the area of this MGWB, 3 separate models were performed: I – in the western part, about 1190 km[sup]2[/sup] large, II – in the central area about 1200 km[sup]2[/sup] large, and III – in the eastern part, about 1080 km[sup]2[/sup] large. Total range of the investigated surfaces was about 3470 km[sup]2[/sup], including the area of groundwater reservoirs of approximately 1863 km[sup]2[/sup]. These models consist of 2 aquifers divided by a confined bed. They were developed for the steady flow conditions. The layer I is in the Quaternary multiaquifer formation, while the layer II is in the Miocene–Neogene level. The article presents the specificity of the construction of mathematical models for filtration conditions in widespread areas with a complicated hydrogeological structure. The article also describes the way of merging these tree models in order to prepare prognoses and water balances as well as to use these researches to optimize waters withdrawal at the existing environmental limitation.

Modelling as a tool for evaluation of the influence of groundwater intakes on surface flows – example from the Koprzywnianka river catchment area
In the area of the Koprzywnianka river catchment and its close vicinity several groundwater intakes are in operation. They exploit variable hydrogeological structures. This exploitation affect the water volume in surface...

Evaluation of the hydrogeochemical interaction of groundwater from the Brwinów Buried Valley and the Mazovian Basin, based on the chemical reaction-path modelling method
The results of hydrodynamic, hydrogeochemical and isotopic researches performed between 2004 and 2007 show that groundwater from the Quaternary series recharges the Oligocene aquifer of the Mazovian Basin in the southern...
