Modelling as a tool for evaluation of the influence of groundwater intakes on surface flows – example from the Koprzywnianka river catchment area

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2008, Vol 431, Issue 431

Abstract

In the area of the Koprzywnianka river catchment and its close vicinity several groundwater intakes are in operation. They exploit variable hydrogeological structures. This exploitation affect the water volume in surface flows within this catchment and in the adjacent catchments. By developing conceptual model the authors considered hydrodynamic controls of groundwater flow within the active exchange zone and hydraulic contacts between groundwater horizons and surface flows. These data were loaded into the mathematical model in order to evaluate current effects of intake operation, possible water take-off and possible discharges, allowed by legal permissions and according to approved admissible reserves of the intakes. Evaluation of the water balance for the study area and analysis of local balances of surface water and groundwater bodies enabled the authors to appraise both the influence of intake operation on the volume of surface flows and the shares of forced inflows from adjacent catchment areas.
