THE EFFECT DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOTUS BEIGE LIMESTONES AS A FACTOR CONTROLLING THEIR PRESERVATION IN SOME HISTORIC SITES OF KRAKÓW
Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2012, Vol 448, Issue 448
Abstract
The authors present lithological characteristic of the Turkish limestones Lotus Beige that for fifteen or so years have been used in both renovation of historic buildings and current constructions of Kraków. However, the limestones are prone to destruction and this has been shown at the example of three selected sites. The destruction changes on the surface and inside the limestones have been detected in detailed hand specimen observations, and also applying instrumental methods: optical microscopy, scanning microscopy (SEM) and spot chemical analysis (EDS). The results have allowed identifying the variety of the Lotus Beige limestones the best suited to the Polish climate and the conditions that must be met to secure its long-lasting utilisation.
