Modelling of the effects of CO[sub]2[/sub] injection into carboniferous aquifers of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Poland)

Abstract
The paper focuses on the problem of geochemical sequestration of CO[sub]2[/sub] in saline aquifers of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). It describes the relevant models of gas–rock–water interactions, and discusses the results of modelling experiments. The conceptual models of hydrogeochemical environment were created based on mineralogical analyses, pore space characteristics and chemical analyses of groundwater representing the Paralic Series of the USCB. Modelling of the kinetic reactions concerned the assumed time limits that are required for gas trapping. The results of the modelling enable estimation of quantities of sequestered gas, changes in overall rock porosity, and characteristics of mineralogical transformation of the rock matrix due to the contact with injected CO[sub]2[/sub].
