Monitoring of the wreck m/s SLEIPNER – possible sources of contamination of the seabed in Polish marine areas
Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 2016, Vol 31, Issue 1
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to make an assessment of the shipwreck’s impact on the marine environment in Polish marine areas based on measurements and investigations. As in other countries around the Baltic Sea, the inventory of wrecks with reference to their harmfulness to the marine environment, which was started in 1998, enabled a list of wrecks to be drawn up and classified according to degree of danger posed. In 2015, seabed sediment pollution in the area of the wreck of a modern motor merchant vessel known as SLEIPNER was monitored. During a voyage from Gdańsk to Newport with a load of timber, due to extreme fog conditions, it sank on 9 July1975 after a collision with a Polish bulk carrier, MARCELI NOWOTKO, to the north of the Rozewie Cape (54.50 N 18.20 E). With its larboard torn, SLEIPNER was grounded, and on 21 August it broke in two during a storm. Within the framework of the works, the stern section, which comprised fuel tanks and an engine room, was investigated. The wreck’s inventory included:• Preparation of a sonar mosaic and bathymetric chart of the area;• Geological analysis of the seabed;• Chemical analysis of water column and bottom sediments;• Assessment of zoobenthos as an indicator of marine environment conditions. There is no proof of a direct negative impact of the wreck on biota (bottom fauna), as it is chemically and biologically inert.

GENERATION OF MESOSCALE CYCLONIC EDDIES IN THE BALTIC SEA WITH INFLOW EVENTS
A sigma-coordinate ocean model, by Blumberg and Mellor (POM). is applied to study the formation processes of mesoscale cyclones observed in the Baltic Sea, following the inflow events. The initial conditions simulate a s...
