Motherhood of women with multiple sclerosis (MS) – a conscious decision or unnecessary risk? An evaluation of the level of knowledge about the disease and pregnancy in women with MS

Journal Title: Medycyna Rodzinna - Year 2015, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease, most prevalent among women in fertile age. Studies have revealed that pregnancy and breast-feeding may have a positive impact on its course, whereas the MS relapse rate increases in the postpartum period. Aim. To determine whether MS may affect reproductive decision making process, and to evaluate the level of knowledge regarding the disease and pregnancy, among female patients. Material and methods. The self-made questionnaire consisting of 31 questions was directed to 55 women (34.7 ± 9.7 yrs) with relapsing-remitting MS, involved in the treatment program, at the Neurology Department of the Central Clinical Hospital, Medical University of Silesia, in Katowice, Poland. The level of knowledge was assumed to be sufficient, when at least 50% of the respondents answered the questions correctly. Results. In the study group, 69% of women did not want to get pregnant; 61% of them – claimed that MS affected their decision whether to start or enlarge family, and 39% – justified their choices with incorrect reasons, which could have been related to their lack of knowledge. Indeed, the study revealed the insufficient level of knowledge about the disease and pregnancy, among females with MS. Women below 35 years of age were better informed. Conclusions. MS often affects the motherhood decision-making process. Many of the female patients choose not to get pregnant, due to lack of knowledge regarding MS and pregnancy. Therefore, physicians need to provide them with up-to-date information, to facilitate the decision making about their families.
