MOTIVATOR DESIGNATION IN THE INNER FORM OF THE ENGLISH JEWELRY NOMINATIONS

Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the inner form of nominations of jewelry on the material of the English specialized encyclopedic dictionaries. The work analyzes the features on which the inner form of English jewelry nominations is based, in particular, the motivator of designation. Motivation is understood as the formal and semantic connection between words as signs and the things they signify. The following encyclopedic dictionaries of the jewelry industry were used as material of the onomasiological study of English jewelry nominations: An Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry and the Glossary of Jewelry-Related Terms. 300 nominations of jewelry were obtained by consecutive selection on the basis of these sources. One of the most numerous groups of the investigated nominations is motivated by the designation of the corresponding jewelry types and accounts for 24% of the total number. This includes nominations motivated by purely functional purpose of jewelry as an element of clothing and appearance of a person. The analysis of the motivation of the studied nominations showed that the motivator of designation also reflects the use of one or another decoration in appropriate cases or situations. Along with the situational type of motivation, we distinguish the social purpose of jewelry, which formed the basis of their motivation. This is first of all manifested in the names of those decorations that indicate the belonging of the wearer to a certain group, that is, these decorations fulfill the identification functions. The social position of a person can also be represented with the help of jewelry. Onomasiological analysis showed that the analyzed feature also reflects the symbolic purpose of certain ornaments. As a rule, these ornaments symbolize certain relations between the persons who wear them.
