MULTICULTURALISM: THE POLICY OF RECOGNITION OR REDISTRIBUTION?

Abstract

This article analyzes the dilemma between the policy of recognition and redistribution within the philosophy of multiculturalism. The recognition policy relates to the status of inequality and identity problems, while the policy of redistribution is more linked to economical inequality and the role of the welfare state. The work of a Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor “The Politics of Recognition” was examined which defines the relationship between identity and recognition, which in turn leads to a policy of multiculturalism and recognition of “equal value of different cultures”. It is proved that the policy of recognition involves accepting and retaining differences in society. It is denied the main arguments of critics of multiculturalism within dilemma recognition – redistribution, which stated that the policy of multiculturalism focuses only on cultural inequality, and does not pay attention to the economical. The dualistic concept of justice by Nancy Fraser is analyzed as the opportunity to solve the dilemma of recognition – redistribution within multiculturalism. It is proved the lack of recognition or false recognition for Fraser does not mean mental deformation and does not impede ethical self-realization, as Honneth and Taylor believed. Instead, the non-recognition for Fraser is the institutional relationship of subordination.
