Abstract

As one of the fundamental components of the culture, the language plays an important role in determining the identity of the individuals and the societies alike. This paper discusses how multilingualism as distinct from the unilingual case can affect the identity of the individual within a society. In the first part of this study, the language phenomenon is discussed within its social context followed by a description of the concept of identity and a discussion on the relation between language and identity. The latter part discusses bilingualism as the minimal condition of multilingualism and the social processes that shape the bilingual individual within the framework of a three - faceted approach. The conclusion discusses the effects of multilingualism in the identity formation.
