Multiple Perspectives and Interdisciplinary Dialogue in Dementia Research

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 21

Abstract

Dementia involves the intricate interplay of factors ranging from biotechnology to cultural psychology and political economy. Based on literature review, this paper examines the prevailing viewpoints across different paradigms and the discourse differences that exist both between and within these paradigms. It reveals the dichotomy between the biological and social perspectives, as well as the gap between theory and practice within dementia knowledge production. It suggests that research in the humanities and social sciences could take the initiative to bridge these divides based on a practice-centered theory of knowledge, exploring how the biomedical processes of dementia are related to broader social situations and cultural contexts through specific actors. This could facilitate a more open dialogue within the dementia research community and provide insights for more effective interventions.
