Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders and the resulting chronic pains are among the common factors of occupational injuries in most countries. Due to special conditions, dentistry is also one of the occupations in which musculoskeletal disorders and chronic pains are highly prevalent. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. It was carried out on Hormozgan Province dentists (n= 102) between October 2013 and April 2014. Data was collected using a checklist. Then, it was analyzed by SPSS using Chi-square, t-independent, and Spearman tests. About 102 dentists participated in this study; 63 (%61.8) were men and 39 (%38.2) women. Prevalence-wise, maximum pain symptoms were first seen in neck (58 (%56.86)) and, then, in back (53 (%51.96)). Here, the relationship between dentists’ musculoskeletal pains and their work hours, position type, work background, and the break between patients’ visits was studied. There was a significant relationship between work hours and pelvis musculoskeletal pain (P=0.012). There was also a significant relationship between visits’ break and shoulder musculoskeletal pain (P=0.032) Most dentists complained of musculoskeletal pain. Neck and back pains were the most prevalent among both genders and in dentists, in general. It was due to their long work hours and short breaks between visits.
