MUSEUM OF THE BARNES FOUNDATION IN PHILADELPHIA

Journal Title: Muzealnictwo - Year 2014, Vol 55, Issue

Abstract

This article presents the history of Albert. C. Barnes collection. Its major part consists of the extraordinary set of Impressionist and Postimpressionist paintings. Because of the quality of paintings, as well as their original arrangement, there is no other collection like this in the whole world. Barnes compiled paintings, furniture and different types of craft arts in characteristic sets, so called ensembles. Since 1925 his collection was at the public display in custom designed classicist building, located in Merion, at the outskirts of Philadelphia. In 2012 Barnes collection was removed, against the collector's will and terms of endowment, into new building, designed by the pair of American architects: Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. The New Barnes Museum is situated in the Museum Quarter, in the Philadelphia downtown. This location provides better access to the public and secures higher number of visitors, it also strengthens tourist offer of the city. The move of Barnes Foundation to the City Center was highly disputable, it included a two-year legal battle. The controversy was marked by the fact, that collector himself, once derided and rejected by Philadelphia elites, despised them, and in his will he made sure, that his collection would be kept intact, invariable and in original place.
