Abstract

Musicology first appeared at the University of Lwów in 1912, thanks to Adolf Chybiński (1880–1952). Adolf Chybiński and his students conducted most of their research on the history of Polish music at the archives in Krakow, believing the former capital of Poland to be the most significant place from this aspect. Chybiński was also interested in the musical past of Lwów and its surrounding territory, though to a much lesser degree. This direction of research, though marginal in terms of the entirety of his life’s work, is deserving of attention – at the very least because he was its initiator in the realm of professional musicological research. The first attempts were made even before the First World War. Historical music from Eastern Galicia was intended to appear on the pages of the Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich, published in Vienna, but unfortunately the project was never realised. Chybiński returned to the idea of music documentation research in Lwów and its surrounding area directly after Poland regained its independence. The idea to inventorise historical music from southern Poland, at this time, took place in connection with the activity of the Ministry of Religious Beliefs and Public Enlightenment in Warsaw. In 1920, Chybiński received an honorarium from the Ministry for his work. However, it was only partially completed, because the musical collection in Lwów and the area was not attractive research material for Chybiński, especially since he still had many unedited documents from previous eras in Krakow. In 1929, Chybiński announced a short work in connection with newly discovered composition manuscripts from the 15th century of Franco-Flemish masters (including Gauillaume Dufaya and Josquina des Pres). Chybiński’s most extensive work pertaining (though indirectly) to the musical culture of Lwów remains: Ziemia Czerwieńska w polskiej kulturze muzycznej XVI wieku (Cherven Lands in Polish 15th Century Musical Culture), which discussed the biographies and works of three figures from this area: Grzegorz from Sanok, Sebastian from Felsztyn (Skelivka) and Marcin Leopolita – the latter was one of the most eminent Polish composers of the Renaissance period. One of Chybiński’s students, Fr. Hieronim Feicht, was also greatly interested in the figure of Marcin Leopolita (Marcin ze Lwowa). Besides this, his greatest research achievement was on the subject of the musical past of Lwów, itself. In 1921, he began archival research in the Latin cathedral in Lwów, thanks to which the musical material preserved there is known. Another Lwów student of musicology, Jan Józef Dunicz, planned to elaborate on operatic history in Lwów from the 1700s to the 1900s. Ultimately, he was only able to compile a short study of Vincenzo Bellini’s operas on the Lviv stage in the 1900s, before the outbreak of the Second World War. All of these research works were interrupted by the consequences of the war, when Polish musicologists left Lwów, suspending the tradition of research of this type altogether.
