Abstract

The rich archival heritage of the Committee for Polish Children in the USSR (Kompoldiet), supplemented with materials from the Archive of Modern Records, as well as individual memories and press cuttings, allows us to present the editorial achievements of an institution that existed at the Ministry of Education of the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic. This field of Kompoldiet’s activity, not yet elaborated in historiography, included the preparation of lesson plans, curricula and textbooks for schools in the Polish language (in exile in the interior of the USSR territory). The article presents the circumstances of establishing on June 30, 1943 by the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR Kompoldiet and its task. In the middle of July 1943, a commission was created that dealt with the approval of educational publications proposed for printing, headed by Dr Żanna Kormanowa. In this area, the Committee closely cooperated in Moscow with the specialized State Educational and Pedagogical Publishing House (Uczpiedgiz). The author shows the inside of the editorial activity of Kompoldiet (publishing plans, reviews of studies, discussions in the Commission forum, political assessments) based on an example of selected titles, important for the preservation of the mother tongue and national consciousness. He then discusses the work of publishing: primer by Henryk Balek and Zofia Charszewska, the Polish history program for grades III–IV and VI–VII (Żanna Kormanowa), readings for the fourth grade (compiled by Zofia Łuczek) and for the third grade (prepared by Balbina Rafałowska), a handbook of Polish geography by Sala Perelman (Kaszewska) and extracts from Polish literature for the fifth grade, prepared by Gabriele Pauszer, and for the sixth grade prepared by Zofia Łuczek.
