Mystics’ Poverty

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 12

Abstract

MaulanaJalalu-'d-din Muhammad Rumi has called poverty the best commodity which has been offered in theosophical school of Mathnawi on which other things are dependent. In this noble book, poverty has been depicted as blameworthy and praiseworthy attitude.By presenting the mentioned characteristics, Rumi has shown the poverty and its ominous effectsand has indicated that the fear of poverty cause some people to be trapped in poverty and beg to earn their living and demolish their essence. But self-raised people are not acquiescent to poverty. Although wealth is not blameworthy by itself, gnostic people choose mysticism in order to abstain from cupidity, oppression, outpouring and etc., for the benefits of poverty. In Rumi's opinion, not everyone can boast of poverty, due to the fact that this precious commodity is just faithful to its own people. The highest degree of poverty is spiritual poverty and separation from what is inferior to God and reaching the stage of desertion is the culmination of mystical poverty.
