MYTHOLOGIZATION AND DEMONIZATION OF B. KHMELNYTSKY’S PERSONALITY AS A FACTOR OF CURRENT POLICY
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Історія" - Year 2018, Vol 310, Issue 298
Abstract
The figure of Bogdan Khmelnytsky takes the prominent place in the pantheon of Ukrainian heroes. At various stages of Ukrainian history, Hetman was honored with approval characteristics and at the same time was the subject of the devastating criticism. To a certain extent, historians and publicists mythologized B. Khmelnitsky. In turn, if the Russian historiography praised him for the signing of the Pereyaslav agreement of 1654, the Polish historical tradition presented him not only as the victorious commander, but also as the personality with his bad traits on the forefront. The analysis, conducted by us, suggests that the personality of Hetman B. Khmelnytsky was often used and is still being used by our neighbors for political purposes.
