Abstract
The Acts of John is an early 2nd-century Christian collection of Johannine narratives and traditions, long known in fragmentary form. This document describes how, on the night before his crucifixion, Jesus commanded the apostles to form a circle around him, and to dance while he sang a hymn to which they responded in a series of “Amens.” This story make the Acts of John a crucially important document for understanding the visionary and Gnostic underpinnings within the tradition of John. The recent publication of a 10th-century Coptic manuscript called the Qasr el-Wizz Codex from a Nubian monastery features a dance similar to the one in the Acts of John. The presence of the dance scene in the Qasr el-Wizz Codex suggest that ritual dance enjoyed a place in established, orthodox Christianity, from early 2nd until 10th-century.
