A comparison of methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses under multiaxial loading
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 38
Abstract
Selected methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses in elastic–plastic isotropic bodies subjected to multiaxial monotonic loading were compared. The methods use sets of equations where hypothetical notch tip elastic strains and stresses obtained from FEM calculations serve as an input. The comparison was performed within two separate groups of methods: the first group consists of the methods intended for cases of multiaxial proportional loading and the second group deals with multiaxial non-proportional loading. Originally, the precision of the methods was validated by comparison with results obtained from elastic–plastic FEM analyses. Since computer performance at the time was lower than nowadays, verification of the proposed methods on FEM models with a finer mesh was needed. Such verification was carried out and is presented in this paper. The effect of various formulations of material stress–strain curve was also evaluated

In recent years, very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of metallic materials has become a major point of interest for researchers and industries. The needs of specific industrial fields (aerospace, mechanical a...
Robust design of a polygonal shaft-hub coupling
In this work, the Taguchi method is applied for the optimal choice of design parameter values for a polygonal shaft-hub coupling. The objective is to maximize a performance function, minimizing, at the same time,...
Fatigue modelling for gas nitriding
The present study aims to develop an algorithm able to predict the fatigue lifetime of nitrided steels. Linear multi-axial fatigue criteria are used to take into account the gradients of mechanical properties prov...
A brittle fracture criterion for PMMA V-notches tensile specimens based on a length-enriched eXtended Finite Element approach
A criterion for the prediction of the static failure loads in tensile PMMA specimens with sharp notches is presented. The proposed criterion is based on a regularized version of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM),...
Crack initiation behavior of notched specimens on heat resistant steel under service type loading at high temperature
Cracks at notches deserve special consideration in the design of steam turbine components. This work is addressed to investigate the crack initiation behavior a 10%Cr rotor steel with the help of notched specimens...
