An efficient Bouc & Wen approach for seismic analysisof masonry tower
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 29
Abstract
The assessment of existing masonry towers under exceptional loads, such as earthquake loads, requires reliable, expedite and efficient methods of analysis. These approaches should take into account boththe randomness that affects the masonry properties (in some cases also the distribution of the elasticparameters) and, of course, the nonlinear behavior of masonry. Considering the need of simplified but effectivemethods to assess the seismic response of such structures, the paper proposes an efficient approach for seismicassessment of masonry towers assuming the material properties as a stochastic field. As a prototype of masonrytowers a cantilever beam is analyzed assuming that the first modal shape governs the structural motion. Withthis hypothesis a nonlinear hysteretic Bouc & Wen model is employed to reproduce the system response whichis subsequently employed to evaluate the response bounds. The results of the simplified approach are comparedwith the results of a finite element model to show the effectiveness of the method.

Effects of hydrogen induced delay fracture on high-strength steel plate of automobile and the improvement
Delay fracture is an environmental embrittlement occurring when materials, environment and stress interact with each other and also a form of hydrogen induced material deterioration. It is a leading factor inhibi...
Research on borehole stability of shale based on seepage-stress-damage coupling model
In oil drilling, one of the most complicated problems is borehole stability of shale. Based on the theory of continuum damage mechanics, a modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion according to plastic damage evoluti...
Damage modelling in concrete subject to sulfate attack
In this paper, we consider the mechanical effect of the sulfate attack on concrete. The durabilityanalysis of concrete structures in contact to external sulfate solutions requires the definition of a properdiffusio...
Multiple and non-planar crack propagation analyses in thin structures using FCPAS
In this study, multiple and non-planar crack propagation analyses are performed using Fracture and Crack Propagation Analysis System (FCPAS). In an effort to apply and validate FCPAS procedures for multiple a...
Crack initiation and early propagation plane orientation of 2A12-T4 aluminum alloy under tension-torsion fatigue loading including mean tensile stress
The specimen fractures appearances are analyzed to investigate the effects of mean tensile stress on the fatigue crack initiation and early propagation plane orientation under axial-torsion fatigue loading for...
