Bioremediation: A cost effective management to aquatic pollution

Journal Title: Applied Science Reports - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

A weekly and monthly ex-situ assessment of polluted water had been done in monoculture (polluted water + Eichhornia species) and mixculture (polluted water + Eichhornia species+ Ceratophyllum species) water with two macrophytes serving as biofilter. In this study a second bioremediator species of fresh water snail Lymnaea (Radix) acuminata (Lamarck) which is used as bioindicator in number of studies. After weekly and monthly assessments of physico-chemical parameters and biomarker acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the nervous tissue of L. acuminata, a significant (p<0.05) recovery in physico-chemical parameters were noted in polluted water in both mono and mixculture of bioremediators. Simultaneously, it was also noticed that AChE activity in the nervous tissue of L. acuminata was significantly increased (40% of control) in weekly assessment and (18% of control) in monthly assessment with respect to polluted water which was (11.95% in weekly) and (8.78% in monthly) assessments, therefore it is also clear from the present study that weekly assessments of bioremediation are more active than monthly. Conclusively, the present study demonstrates that use of flora and fauna for bioremediation in polluted water is helpful in reducing the aquatic pollution, this study proving a cost effective management to water pollution.
