Comparative Physico- chemical Analysis of Traditional and Hexane Extracts of Shea nut Fat.

Abstract

 Physico-chemical parameters of n-hexane and local shea nut fat extracts were exploited and the following results were obtained; Saponification values (mgKOH/g): 172.59 ± 0.33a and 141.12±1.19b, Acid values (mg/KOH/g): 7.48±0.43a and 13.45±0.75b, Iodine values (mg/iodine/100g): 15.23 ± 0.36a and 16.12±0.89a, Percentage free fatty acids (mg/g) : 10.90 ± 2.28a and 13.54±0.57a, Specific densities (g/cm³ ) : 0.91and 0.93 respectively, Oil yield (%) for only hexane extract was 65.03, Colours were observed to be Cream- Yellow and Brown respectively. ANOVA was used for the statistical analysis; there was significant difference in the saponification values, acid values and free fatty acids at 5% level of significance, while there was no significance difference in the iodine values of the fat extracts at 5% level of significance. The results favourably showed that the fats extracts are utilizable for cosmetic application at industrial scale.
