Comparing Medicinal Plant Extracts and Pulsing Treatments on Rose Cut Flowers "Dolce Vita"

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

The effect a pulse treatment¬ of 4%(w/v) calcium chloride + 3%(w/v) sucrose and deionised water(DI) in combination with medicinal plant extracts (Stevia rebaudiana, Thymus vulgaris)at 0.1,0.2 ppm for 24 h was evaluated daily for its effect on the vase life and flower quality of cut rose flowers "Dolce Vita". A completely randomized design with three replications was used in this survey. Effects on vase life and the flower quality were evaluated by analyzing relative fresh weight (RFW) , flower senescence, flower diameter, chlorophyll content of rose cut flowers. A significant improvement in flower diameter and relative fresh weight (RFW) of rose cut flowers were occurred when treated with 0.1ppm Thyme extracts more effects when combined with a pulse treatment of 3% (w/v) sucrose +4% (w/v) cacl2 , which recorded the best¬ treatment compared to other concentrations of medicinal plant extracts . Also Stevia extracts at 0.1 ppm accompanied by 3% (w/v) sucrose +4% (w/v) cacl2 retarded the chlorophyll degradation during the postharvest life. The flower senescence and/or wilting were minimized as result of using Thyme extracts¬ at 0.2 ppm accompanied by 3% (w/v) sucrose +4% (w/v) cacl2 . However the flower senescence increased with a pulse treatment of deionised water (DI) along with Thyme extracts at 0.2 ppm ,while the pulse treatment of 3% (w/v) sucrose +4% (w/v) cacl2 shortened the period to reach wilting. Futhermore, the pulse treatment of 3% (w/v) sucrose +4% (w/v) cacl2 in combination with Thyme extracts¬ at 0.2 ppm had more positive effects on extending the vase life of cut rose flowers than two controls groups or other treatments.
