Crack propagation mechanism and life prediction for very-high-cycle fatigue of a structural steel in different environmental medias
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 25
Abstract
The influence of environmental medias on crack propagation of a structural steel at high and very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) regimes is investigated based on the fatigue tests performed in air, water and 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Crack propagation mechanisms due to different crack driving forces are investigated in terms of fracture mechanics. A model is proposed to study the relationship between fatigue life, applied stress and material property in different environmental medias, which reflects the variation of fatigue life with the applied stress, grain size, inclusion size and material yield stress in high cycle and VHCF regimes. The model prediction is in good agreement with experimental observations.

Fatigue life estimation in welded joints under multiaxial loadings
Welded joints are frequently locations for cracks initiation and propagation that may cause fatigue failure of engineering structures. Biaxial or triaxial stress-strain states are present in the vicinity of welded joint...
Plastic flow equations for the local strain approach in the multiaxial case
This paper presents a system of plastic flow equations which uses and generalizes to the multiaxial case a number of concepts commonly employed in the so-called Local Strain Approach to low cycle fatigue. Eve...
Structural mechanisms of formation of adiabatic shear bands
The paper focuses on the experimental and theoretical study of plastic deformation instability and localization in materials subjected to dynamic loading and high-velocity perforation. We investigate the behavior...
2D mapping of plane stress crack-tip fields following an overload
The evolution of crack-tip strain fields in a thin (plane stress) compact tension sample following an overload (OL) event has been studied using two different experimental techniques. Surface behaviour has been c...
Structure service life assessment under combined loading using probability approach
This article presents a basic research approach for probabilistic assessment of vehicle structure fatigue endurance under multiaxial loading. One representative welded structural detail of the bottom joint plate o...
