Critical applied stresses for a crack initiation from a sharp V-notch
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 30
Abstract
The aim of the paper is to estimate a value of the critical applied stress for a crack initiation from a sharp V-notch tip. The classical approach of the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LELM) was generalized, because the stress singularity exponent differs from 0.5 in the studied case. The value of the stress singularity exponent depends on the V-notch opening angle. The finite element method was used for a determination of stress distribution in the vicinity of the sharp V-notch tip and for the estimation of the generalized stress intensity factor depending on the V-notch opening angle. Critical value of the generalized stress intensity factor was obtained using stability criteria based on the opening stress component averaged over a critical distance d from the V-notch tip and generalized strain energy density factor. Calculated values of the critical applied stresses were compared with experimental data from the literature and applicability of the LEFM concept is discussed.

Multiaxial fatigue assessment of crankshafts by local stress and critical plane approach
For multiaxially-loaded parts several stress-based fatigue assessment concepts are applicable mostly taking uniaxial test results as basis. These approaches work well in case of proportional loading states, but on...
Multiscale approach to description of deformation and fracture of brittle media with hierarchical porous structure on the basis of movable cellular automaton method
An approach to multiscale description of deformation and fracture of brittle porous materials on the basis of movable cellular automaton method was proposed. The material characterized by pore size distribution fun...
Multi-scale crack closure measurements with digital image correlation on Haynes 230
An experimental campaign was developed to study fatigue crack growth in Haynes 230, a Ni-based superalloy. The effects of crack closure were investigated with digital image correlation, by applying two different...
On the crack path under mixed mode loading on PUR foams
In this paper are presented the crack initiation angles obtained in polyurethane (PUR) foams under mixed mode loading. Closed cell rigid PUR foams having three different densities 100, 145, and 300 kg/m3 were inve...
Analysis of cracking of low-alloy copper stretched at elevated temperature
This paper presents both mechanical and structural aspects of micro-cracking of CuNi2Si copper alloy in CNCS grade revealed during the static tensile test in the temperature range between 20ºC and 800ºC. The...
