CROP PERFORMANCE OF GROUNDNUT (ARACHIS HYPOGAEA L.) PLANTS DEVELOPED FROM DIFFERENT SEED LOTS WITH AN EMPHASIS ON ORGANIC FERTILIZER REGIMES

Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

ABSTRACT A field experiment was conducted at the Eastern region of Sri Lanka to determine the performance of groundnut progeny from plants treated with different fertilizer regimes. Treatments were assigned according to the seed source, namely T1, seeds from inorganically fertilized plants, T2, seeds from unfertilized plants, T3, seeds from plants treated with 5 t/ha cattle manure (CM), T4, seeds from plants treated with 10 t/ha CM, T5, seeds from plants treated with 15 t/ha CM and T6, seeds from plants treated with 20 t/ha CM. There was no significant difference between treatments on seed germination %. However, at maturity, the dry weight of leaves, stems, nodules and pods/plant differed significantly among the treatments. A higher nodule dry weight was recorded in T4 even though T5 showed highest dry weight per plant of leaves (12.72 g), stems (16.22 g), roots (0.64 g) and pods (17.78 g) 12 weeks after sowing. Plant biomass (47.55 g) was significantly higher in groundnut progeny from T5 than from T1 (38.72 g) after 12 weeks. The plants that developed from seeds harvested from a T5-fertilized field showed better crop performance on sandy regosol. Key words: Cattle manure, Groundnut, Inorganic Fertilizer, Plant biomass.
