Journal Title: Nowa Pediatria - Year 2015, Vol 19, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Eating behaviours are determined by cultural, demographic, social as well as environmental factors, including nutrition knowledge gained at different stages of life. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess eating behaviours and nutrition knowledge of students. Material and methods. 884 school students from the Upper Silesian region in Poland participated in the study. The research materials included questionnaires prepared by the author of the study. Results. The consumption of 4-5 meals daily was declared by 56.5% of the underweight respondents, 58.9% of those with normal weight and 48.4% of overweight or obese students. The question about recommended number of meals which should be eaten a day was answered correctly by 70.4% of the underweight students, 69.5% of those having normal weight and 62.1% of the overweight respondents. Milk and/or milk drinks as well as meat and/or cold meat were eaten at least once a day by 58.3 and 57.8% of the underweight respondents, 56.2 and 62% of those with normal weight and 51.7 and 67.3% of overweight students respectively. Vegetables and fruit were consumed at least once a day by 67.3 and 71.2% of the underweight respondents, 59 and 64.5% of those with normal weight and 63.9 and 63.9% of overweight students respectively. The correct answers to the question about how often one should consume vegetables were provided by 55.2% of the underweight students, 55.9% of those having normal weight and 53.4% of the overweight respondents. Conclusions. Eating behaviours of the surveyed students were unsatisfying, however, nutrition knowledge was sufficient. Discrepancies were observed between the respondents’ nutrition knowledge and the application of it in everyday life.
