Evaluation of fetal heart rate in the third trimester of pregnancy while listening to music Maurice Ravel and Johann Strauss

Abstract

 Introduction. The value of music therapy is slowly used in different fields in medicine also in obstetrics. Using the music therapy during pregnancy may make better comfort not only of the pregnant woman but also of the unborn child. Aim. The aim of this examination was to evaluate selected parameters of fetal heart rate in the record cardiotocography for the women in the third trimester of pregnancy while listening to different pieces of music. Material and methods. The study consisted of 15 minute session of music therapy during which the women in the third trimester were listening to the following pieces of music: “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel and “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss. The study were conducted between February and May at Pregnancy Pathology Department in University Hospital. Examinated were forty women during the third trimester. Medium gestational age was 33 weeks. Results. During a session of music therapy following parameters were increased: fetal movements, basic fetal heart rate and short-term variability. The remaining parameters of cardiotocography record: accelerations, the number of contractions, during the session of music therapy decreased. Conclusions. Change the parameters of analysis cardiotocographic records can be seen directly. Classical music has a positive effect on fetal development.
