Effect of methods of trellising on yield and quality of determinate tomato varieties

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Tomato (Lycoperscicon esculentum) is one of the most popular vegetables in Zimbabwe owing to its income generating capacity and nutritional value. A 3 x 4 factorial experiment in Randomised Complete Block Design with 3 replications was carried out in Mutoko district in the dry season of 2013(May- October) to study the effects of trellising methods on the yield and quality of determinate tomato varieties. Trellising methods consisted of staking and weave, single pole staking, caging, ground culture (control) and varieties were Roma, Floridade and Rio Grande. Caging produced the highest significant (p<0.05) number of fruits per plant, highest marketable yield and total yield. A corresponding reduction in unmarketable yield was also recorded in caging trellising system. Single pole; and staking and weave trellising methods resulted in poor marketable yield of tomato. The yields from staking and weave and single pole staking were significantly the same. Genetic variability of tomatoes may also play a role in determining the quality of the fruits as evidenced by higher marketable yield of Roma when compared to Floridade and Rio Grande.
