Effects of Planting Methods, Nitrogen Fertilizer and Plant Density on Quality and Quantity of Borage (Borago officinalis L.)

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

In order to study the effect of two planting methods (Furrow and Basin) three within row distances (15, 20 and 25 cm) and three levels of nitrogen fertilizer (50,100 and 150 kg.ha) on the quality and quantity of yield experiment was conducted during 1996 at the Agricultural Research Station of Iranian Research Organization for Science and the Technology Khorasan Center (I.R.O.S.T) at Khezri. The results indicated that maximum in florescence’s dry height yield weight obtained in furrow planting (1640 kg.ha). In spite of high yield tannin and mucilage percentages was decreased. Maximum yield were obtained by using nitrogen at rate of 100 kg.ha. However, increasing the rate of nitrogen fertilizer resulted increasing the percentage of tannin and mucilage inflorescences. The optimum population density for this plant was 105 per hectare, in which the highest amount of active substances. Planting methods, plant population and nitrogen fertilizer didn't affect the percentage potassium, sodium, calcium, insoluble ashes in acid, and total ashes. The interaction of planting method and nitrogen fertilizer on tannin, mucilage percentage and inflorescences dry weight were significant. The maximum inflorescences dry weight yield and tannin percentage were obtain fined in furrow planting at the rate of 150 kg N.ha the highest percentage of mucilage were of obtained in basin planting at the rate 100 kg N.ha The interaction of planting method and plant density on tannin percentage were significant. The highest amount of tannin percentage (1.47%) were obtained in basin method with 105 Pl.ha and minimum percentage of tannin (1.34%) were obtained in furrow method with 1.3x104 Pl.ha. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer and population density on inflorescence dry weight and tannin and mucilage percentage were significant. The highest amount inflorescences dry weight and of tannin percentage were obtained at the rate of 105 Pl .ha at the rate of 100 kg.ha at the rate of 100 kg.ha of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest amount of mucilage percentage obtained at plant density of 105 per hectare at the rate of 150 kgN.ha. The maximum inflorescences dry weight yield was obtained in furrow method with 100 kg.ha of nitrogen and plant density of 105 plant per hectare. Maximum percentage of tannin and mucilage were obtained in basin planting with 150 kg.ha of nitrogen fertilizer and 105 Pl.ha.
